Earlier models of Brother ink jet printers don’t have an intelligent chip on the ink cartridges like other brands. The printer has a U-shaped sensor that the cartridge slides into. The sensor looks through the cartridge to detect the ink level.
If you replaced a cartridge and the printer continues to give you a “replace cartridge” error it usually means the ink cartridge sensor in the machine is in need of cleaning.
Cleaning of the sensor is best done with cotton buds moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Don’t give up too soon – you may need up to 20 cotton buds to get the job done.
