If you replace a toner in your Brother MFC9460CDN and the counter doesn’t correctly reset, you can use the following instructions to reset the counter.
- Turn the printer off and open the front cover.
- Then turn the printer on.
- The printer will display “Cover is open”, then press the “clear” key to display the Reset menu.
- Locate the correct toner option to reset and select it and press ok.
- Press ok to confirm the reset
- If performed correctly the printer will display “Accepted“.
- Close front cover and the printer should start up with the counter properly reset, and the error message gone.
Note: for selecting the correct toner you need to understand the cartridge code system Brother uses:
- Black is K, Magenta is M, Cyan is C and Yellow is Y
- TNR = toner
- STR = starter cartridge (the toner cartridges that came with your printer)
- STD = standard toner or TN340
- HC = high yield toner or TN348
So to reset the TN340M magenta toner counter you would select M.TNR.STD (Magenta~Toner~Standard yield).
Note: this procedure has been tested on the MFC-9460CDN

Nice tips & tricks “how to”! I have a question.
I have a Brother MFC-9460CDN, while updating with the update tool it got stuck…. Now i have a brick….. Brother service (level2) told me that there’s no software/firmware in the printer (eeprom?), and the printer probably have to be reflashed. Do you have information “how to” ?
Thanks in advanced.
Rickson
There is software/firmware of a sort on the printer (the closest thing to a software-less printer is the old analogue photo copier and even they sill had some programing) but updating can be tricky even impossible with a bricked printer. I would put in a service call for it if its under warranty.
You will find the firmware for the MFC9460CDN printer here http://support.brother.com/g/b/producttop.aspx?c=nz&lang=en&prod=mfc9460cdn_all
Note this is from the New Zealand site and the firmware in your area may differ
It is a simple job of running the program and it does the rest.
Good Luck
When I changed the toner on my MFC9460CDN, it kept showing Replace Toner and then Cover is Open. I went back and got another replacement toner, but same happened. Then we tried the above method, and it all reset and started working properly. I do not recall seeing the word “Accepted”. But I could have missed it. So these instructions were very helpful. Thanks.
